New Director for the LCN

We are pleased to announce that Professor Andrew Fisher has commenced his role of the new co-director of the London Centre for Nanotechnology from the University College London.  The LCN is jointly owned and run by UCL and Imperial, with one co-director from each university.

Andrew is a Professor of Physics in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at UCL and the LCN.  He runs a research group in the area of theoretical condensed-matter physics and is interested in understanding the theoretical foundations of the newly emerging area of nanoscale science.  He is particularly interested in the impact of quantum mechanics on the dynamics of nanostructures which he investigates using a mixture of computational and analytical techniques, whilst working closely with experimentalists.

He has had a very active teaching role, for which he was awarded the Provost’s Teaching Award in 2013, and is the co-author of a graduate textbook on the theory of critical phenomena. Prior to this new appointment, he was also director of UCL’s Centre for Doctoral Training in Delivering Quantum Technologies, inaugurated in May 2014, serving to coordinate and support research across the university across a range of departments and disciplines.

Andrew Fisher commented that he is ”very proud” to be taking up the role of LCN Director at UCL.  ”The LCN is a fantastic institution and I am really looking forward to working with all the staff and students over the coming years.  I’m particularly grateful to Des McMorrow for the great job he did as Director over the last eighteen months – and glad that UCL’s MAPS Faculty will continue to benefit from his experience and insight in his new role as Vice-Dean of Research”.

Professor Nick Brook, Executive Dean of the MAPS Faculty, said “I am very much looking forward to working with Andrew to ensure the LCN continues to occupy its prominent global position and to support him so the LCN continues to thrive.”

Andrew took up his position in October 2015.

More details of Professor Fisher’s projects, publications and teaching involvement can be found on his home page.
