More details at the bottom of the post.

The LCN Participated in National Nanotechnology Day earlier this week. The event was devised by the National Nanotechnology Initiative in the US and is an annual event featuring community-led events and activities on or around October 9 to help raise awareness of nanotechnology, how it is currently used in products that enrich our daily lives, and the challenges and opportunities it holds for the future.

The theme for this year’s National Nanotechnology Day was nanotechnology’s role in understanding and responding to climate change and improving the health of the Earth and its people. Some of the LCN posts are shown below, and you can see the amazing posts relating to the day using the hashtag #Nanoday here.

As our date formatting works differently, the LCN will be running events in the UK in 2023 on or around 10th September, this annual event will be called UK Nano Day, where we encourage all researchers and companies in Nano to share their love for the tiny with the general public.

We are grateful for the help and guidance that the National Nanotechnology Initiative has given us for planning UK Nanoaday. The inaugural event was planned for 2022 but was postponed due to the national mourning period.

We look forward to celebrating with you all in 2023!

If you can’t wait until then, you can see some of the exhibits we were due to showcase the UK Nanoday at ‘Imperial Lates: Tiny Science‘ being held on 10 November 2022 at Imperial College London.

This image shows a river surrounded by mountains. Or does it? Actually, it’s an image taken with an electron microscope of the surface of a thin film. When you use a microscope, you can zoom in and see things you wouldn’t be able to see with the naked eye. With an electron microscope, you can see things all the way down to atoms. In this image, the details of the surface of the film are not quite at the atomic level yet, but they are close, and these details look a lot like the bird’s-eye view of a landscape. This image was one of the winners of the 2021 Plenty of Beauty at the Bottom image contest, hosted by the National Nanotechnology Coordinated Infrastructure in honour of National Nanotechnology Day.
