COVID-19 talks launch LCN joint seminar series

The LCN held its first online joint seminar this earlier this week. The seminar focused on the LCN response to the COVID-19 pandemic, which includes new approaches to detect and control the virus, assess the virus using data and machine learning, and manufacture vaccines.

‘It was very inspiring to hear about the different interdisciplinary approaches that LCN researchers are using to combat the pandemic: from new nanomaterials enabling novel assays and anti-infection coatings, to data-driven dashboards highlighting the current state of the UK response and plans for a massive scale-up of vaccine production” – Professor Andrew Fisher, co-director of the LCN

The talks on the day were from:

Dr Cecilia Mattevi – Imperial College London – Nanotechnology-Enabled Approaches against the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Professor Rachel McKendry – UCL – i-sense EPSRC IRC: Harnessing nanotechnology, biomedical engineering and machine learning to build early warning sensing systems for COVID-19.

Professor Harris Makatsoris – King’s College London – Modular factories-in-a-box for scalable vaccine manufacture.

You can watch the talks below, the i-sense COVID response evaluation dashboard can be found here.

The joint LCN seminars are a new initiative and aim to showcase complementary research being carried out across the three institutions. Each seminar will focus on a specific challenge, topic, or technique, and will comprise of short talks. The next event will be held on the 18th November 2020 and will focus on Plasmonics.
