LCN student awarded the prestigious Ramsay Medal

It has been announced that LCN PhD student, Toby Gill, has been awarded the Ramsay Medal by UCL’s Department of Chemistry.  Toby Gill is supervised by Dr Cyrus Hirjibehedin and co-supervised by Professor Yukiko Yamada-Takamura at the Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (JAIST), Japan.

The UCL-JAIST collaboration that has funded Toby’s studentship is coordinated through the Molecular Modeling and Materials Science Centre for Doctoral Training (M3S CDT) in Chemistry.

Toby was awarded this prestigious medal for his research on “Controlling the electronic and magnetic properties of the two dimensional material silicene”.

The Ramsay Medal has been awarded annually at UCL since 1923 to the top postgraduate student or students studying in their final year within the Department of Chemistry.  It is awarded on behalf of the department, upon the recommendation of a jury of academics where preference is given, other things being equal, to a student whose work has been distinguished in those departments of Chemical Science with which the researches of the late Sir William Ramsay were specially associated.

In 1904, during his tenure at UCL, Sir William Ramsay was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in recognition of his services in the discovery of the inert gaseous elements in air, and his determination of their place in the periodic system.  The Ramsay Memorial Fund was founded in 1922 by its subscribers in memory of Sir William Ramsay, Professor of General and Inorganic Chemistry in the College, 1887-1913
