About the Workshop

Effective visuals are a core element of academic dissemination and communication. Despite this, researchers often receive little formal training in visual design and scientific illustration. This practical workshop takes a holistic approach to visual communication by combining key design principles with hands-on illustration skills. Participants will explore topics including visual storytelling, perception theory, layout and composition, and the effective use of colour. These principles underpin many of the visual outputs used key to research, including publication figures, conference posters and diagrams for presentations. The workshop will include guided practical tutorials in:

  • Inkscapefor creating 2D scientific illustrations
  • Blenderfor creating 3D scientific illustrations and visualisations

Dr Ryo Mizuta is a Senior Teaching Associate in the Department of Physics at the University of Cambridge. He specialises in visualisation strategies for scientific communication (particularly the physical siences), and is a scientific illustrator (Ryo Mizuta Graphics). His YouTube Channel includes tutorials for Blender-based illustrations for the Physical Sciences. He creates interactive 3D visualisation models based on Blender for illustration and educational purposes, which he makes freely available online (check them out here).
