Dr Yansha Deng is the 2021 recipient of the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) Communications Society Best Young Researcher Award for Europe, Middle East &Africa Region.
The award honors young researchers who have been very active in IEEE related activities such as ComSoc (the IEEE Communications Society) publications and conferences in the past three years.
As a Senior Lecturer at King’s College London, Yansha’s research focuses on intelligent connectivity for multi-scale communication systems and networks, which include molecular communication and 5G and 6G wireless networks.
Carrying out this pioneering research from 2012- 2022, her group has published 90+ high-quality journals and 50+ IEEE flagship conferences.
On her inspiration for research in communication, Yansha commented:
“I am amazed by how communication can improve human life. The wireless communication networks are evolving rapidly over the years, where 5G and 6G networks are expected to support the connectivity for new devices, such as sensors, unmanned aerial vehicles, and extended reality devices. It is important to develop new communication protocols and techniques to satisfy the new requirements of these new devices.
Traditional communication theory has been mainly based on electromagnetic waves, whereas the molecular communication system relies on chemical signals propagation and has been less studied but plays an important role in micro and nano-scale communication.”
Being the recipient of the 2021 IEEE award has motivated Yansha to pursue further research: “It is my pleasure to receive this prestigious award, that recognizes the research contributions my group has made over the years. As a young female academic, I will endeavour to spend my life pursuing high-quality research that benefits the research community and society.” she said.
