QuantERA call 2017 recommends UCL-led quantum technology project

Thanks to joint funding provided by the European Union and QuantERA member organisations, 26 excellent international proposals in the field of quantum technology research have recently been recommended for funding.

The UCL-led project ‘Polariton lattices: a solid-state platform for quantum simulations of correlated and topological states’ was number 6 in the overall ranking and is the largest consortium, consisting of 7 partners involving research teams from widening countries. LCN academic; Dr Marzena Szymanska who is based within the Department of Physics and Astronomy at UCL, is the Personal Investigator and Coordinator of this project.

The development of quantum simulation lacks compact on-chip scalable platforms.  The consortium, consisting of partners in the UK, France, Germany, Poland and Israel, will aim to develop the world-first polariton quantum simulator, an entirely new platform.  It will combine the expertise in semiconductor physics and technology of four experimental groups and the input of three theoretical groups to push polariton nonlinearities into the strongly interacting regime.  The project will provide the first quantum simulation platform using scalable lattices at optical wavelengths, and enable simulations of some of the most fundamental strongly interacting quantum models.

QuantERA is a network of 32 organisations from 26 countries, coordinated by the National Science Centre, Poland, supporting research in Quantum Technologies (QT). With a budget of €36 M, including co-funding from the European Commission, QuantERA supports international research projects in the field of QT.  QuantERA answers the growing need for collaborative endeavours and common funding scheme within QT research, which due to its highly interdisciplinary nature cannot be confined to an individual institution or state.
