Strand Research Facility Showcase
Event details
Event date:
November 4, 2026
Event time:
2:00 pm
Join the Faculty of Natural, Mathematical & Engineering Sciences to hear how King’s College London Strand Research Facility has been used to tackle challenges across art conservation and nanotechnology. Discover how researchers use electron microscopy and related methods to analyse historic artworks, detect forgeries, and support conservation, alongside insights into Atomic Layer Deposition and its applications in cutting-edge nanophotonics research.
What’s on?
Grace Storey – ArtDiscovery Inc. and the National Portrait Gallery
Grace Storey is an early-career painting conservator currently working for both ArtDiscovery Inc. and The National Portrait Gallery. Grace’s talk will outline how scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS) is utilised in the art world to provide more information about the materials and techniques used to execute artworks, inform conservation treatments, and aid in attribution cases.
Helen Cunningham-Jones – Electron Microscopy
Helen is a third-year PhD student in engineering at King’s College London, with a background in both physics and museum conservation. She will delve further into the world of electron microscopy, discussing the analysis methods available at the Strand Research Facility and how she has applied these to heritage science.
Henry Cossey – Atomic Layer Deposition
Henry is a PhD student in the Photonics and Nanotechnology group at King’s College London. His work focuses on the fabrication and characterisation of materials and nanostructures for applications in nanophotonics. Henry will talk about Atomic Layer Deposition, a technique capable of depositing ultrathin layers of material onto complex geometries. Henry will explain how this is being used for nanophotonics research at King’s.
