Terry Tetley is Professor of Lung Cell Biology and Head of the Lung Cell Biology Group in the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College London.
She gained a BSc in Genetics and Microbiology, and a PhD in Biochemistry at the University of Wales, Cardiff. She subsequently went to Charing Cross and Westminster Hospital Medical School, to establish her own research team and joined the National Heart and Lung Institute in 1998, moving to the Brompton site in 2001. Her research focuses on the cellular and molecular mechanisms of pulmonary diseases related to inhaled toxicants, including cigarette smoke, asbestos, ambient particulate air pollution and engineered nanoparticles.
Professor Tetley initiated the Imperial College strategy on “Nanoparticles and Health” in 2006, subsequently joining forces with the Natural History Museum, when Na-NoRISK (Nanotoxicology Research In South Kensington) was formed. Na-NoRISK provides an interdisciplinary forum for researchers to collaborate and address challenges at a fundamental level. This initiative involves scientists from the Faculties of Medicine, Life Sciences and Engineering, as well as colleagues from the Natural History Museum, and has so far generated a significant combined income for Imperial College greater than £5M. Professor Tetley is a PI in the MRC-HPA Centre for the Environment and Health at Imperial College (jointly with KCL). She is also a member of the National Nanotoxicology Research Centre. She is regularly asked to speak and organise nanotoxicology-related meetings at a National and International level.
She is a Fellow of the Society of Biology (previously the Institute of Biology) and was Vice President of the Institute of Biology from 2000 until 2004, when she also chaired the Board of Public Relations. She has served on the Biomedical Sciences Committee of this organisation on a number of occasions. She is currently President of the British Association for Lung Research, previously serving as Chairman from 2001-2005. She has served on the British Thoracic Society Research Meetings Committee (2001-2005), is currently a member of the British Lung Foundation Research Grants Committee (2008-2011) and sits on the German Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft: DFG priority program 1313 – Biological Responses to Nanoscale Particles review panel (2007-2010).
Professor Tetley is also very committed to student education and has been teaching medical students for over 25 years. She was the Course Director for the Respiratory Science with Medicine intercalated MBBS BSc from 1999 until 2005 and is currently Module Leader for one of the modules on this course. She has been actively involved in all aspects of course development, examinations and student welfare; in addition, she assesses and advises new teachers. In 2009 she became a Senior Tutor in the Faculty of Medicine in charge of student welfare for MBBS year 4 (BSc), first year Graduate Entry MBBS and the Biomedical Sciences students.
Professor Tetley is currently funded by the MRC, NERC, industry, NIEHS (US) and is a principal investigator of an EU FP7 programme, NanoRetox. She collaborates with a number of researchers at Imperial College, including Professor Yuri Korchev and Dr Julia Gorelik on the cardiorespiratory cellular reactivity of nanoparticles (MRC), Professors Alan Boobis and Stefan Grimm on screening of nanomaterials (MRC), Professor Fan Chung, Dr Alexandra Porter, Dr Mary Ryan and Professor Milo Shaffer on in vitro and in vivo effects of nanomaterials related in relation to particle physicochemistry (NERC and NIEHS), Mr Eric Lim on individualisation of effective chemotherapy for lung cancer (industrial), and Professors Paul Cullinan, Peter Collins and Fan Chung on the effects of environmental ultra-fine particles on airways dysfunction in COPD subjects.
